Melvin leaves San Diego for district rival with time left on contract
A smiling Bob Melvin is the new manager of the San Francisco Giants.
Bob Melvin, 61, who had one year left on his contract with the San Diego Padres, has
been named manager of the San Francisco Giants, a division rival.
Melvin held a press conference at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, U.S., home
of the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB) on Monday (June 26) and
expressed his excitement to switch uniforms.
“There were a lot of stories about me (in San Diego), and I felt like they weren’t going
to go away for a while,” Melvin said, “so this is a great opportunity for me.”

Melvin, a three-time Manager of the Year, took over as San Diego’s manager last year
and led the team to the National League Championship Series (NLCS) before falling
short of the postseason this season.
Melvin has recently been rumored to be feuding with general manager A.J. Preller, who
has denied that he has a problem with Melvin.
However, Melvin is still under contract with San Diego and has taken the job with
division rival San Francisco.
With San Diego’s permission, Melvin interviewed with San Francisco’s board of
directors, and they all signed on the dotted line.
The three-year deal keeps Melvin at the helm through the 2026 season.
San Francisco “did not pay San Diego to release Coach Melvin,” the club said.
Former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shields is the favorite to replace Melvin.
