After the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, the record of former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is in the spotlight.
Arsenal won 3-2 against Tottenham Hotspur in the 35th round of the 2023-2024 English Premier League (EPL) season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Aug. 28 at 10 p.m. ET.
Arsenal pushed Spurs hard in the first half. The Gunners took the lead in the 15th minute on an own goal by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and extended their lead to three goals with back-to-back goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and Kai Havertz. Tottenham rallied in the second half. Cristian Romero scored the equalizer and Son Heung-min made it 2-3 from the penalty spot.
But Tottenham’s chase was short-lived. Arsenal failed to keep a clean sheet on the day, and first-choice goalkeeper David Luiz failed to break a record. He had kept six consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League away from home, but the Tottenham goal broke that streak. According to Squawka, a soccer statistics website, the only other goalkeeper to keep seven consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League is Van de Sar.
Van de Sar is a goalkeeper from the Netherlands. He has been a member of the Golden Generation since his first-team debut at Ajax, and at Manchester United, he was the perfect replacement for Peter Schmeichel during the club’s glory years. For the national team, he was in goal for the Orange Army, leading them to the 1998 World Cup quarterfinals, Euro 2000 quarterfinals, and Euro 2004 quarterfinals.
After growing up in Fareholte and Nordwijk, van der Sar moved to Eredivisie giants Ajax in 1990, where he played in the first team from the 1990-91 season. That same year, Louis van Gaal was appointed manager of Ajax and he gradually became a regular in the team, winning the European Football Association (UEFA) Cup in 1991-92 and the UEFA Champions League in 1994-95, establishing himself as a world-class goalkeeper.
After spells at Juventus and Fulham, van de Sar joined United in the summer of 2005. He immediately became a fixture in the team’s starting lineup, solving the goalkeeping anxiety that had plagued the club since Schmeichel. Van de Sar was a veteran 바카라 at the time and was expected to retire after two or three years, but he lasted six seasons in goal for United.
Van de Sar has a close relationship with Park Ji-Sung. It’s what inspired him to join United. Park Ji-Sung joined United in 2005-06, the same season van de Sar arrived, and they played together for six seasons until 2010-11.
Van de Sar led United to three consecutive Premier League titles starting in 2006-07 and was named to the PFA Team of the Year. In 2007-08, he led United to back-to-back Premier League titles and the Champions League, completing a double for the club, most notably saving Nicolas Anelka’s penalty in the Champions League final to win the trophy himself.
After winning the Premier League title in his final season in 2010-11, van de Sar announced his retirement from active football. Van de Sar then went on to become a soccer administrator, serving as president of Ajax until 2023. He left Ajax before this season and recently 메이저 토토사이트 suffered a brain hemorrhage and is currently undergoing treatment.
Van de Sar set a number of records in 2008-09, including seven consecutive clean sheets away from home. At that point in the season, van de Sar had kept 1311 minutes of clean sheets in 14 games. In the Premier League, he even broke Chelsea legend Petr Cech’s record of 1035 minutes, at the age of 39.
If Lallana had kept a clean sheet in the match between Tottenham and Arsenal, he would have tied Van de Sar’s record. However, he kicked himself in the foot when he conceded a goal through his own mistake.
