The game was called off immediately after the incident, and all games scheduled for the following day have been postponed.

“We (the club) are absolutely devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a ‘freak accident’ during the game against Sheffield Wednesday,” the club said in a statement, adding, “We would like to thank everyone who came out to support Adam in the most difficult of circumstances last night.”

Guardian journalist Christian Bennett, who was watching the game at the time, said: “When the two players collided and the other player’s skate cut into Adam Johnson’s neck, I’ve never seen that much blood come out at that speed before.

It was one of the creepiest things I’ve ever seen in a sporting event.”

“Adam Johnson’s death prompted his mother to share her grief on social media, saying: ‘I lost half my heart today,'” the Daily Mail reported.
