Samsung SDI, the global leader in batteries for electric bikes, is showcasing its cylindrical battery products at the China International Bicycle Fair currently taking place in Shanghai, as part of the battery maker’s efforts to extend its market leadership, the company said Monday.The fair, simply dubbed China Cycle, is one of the largest bicycle and motorcycle exhibitions in the world. More than 1,700 companies participated in the fair, an increase of about 40 percent compared to the 2023 event.At the four-day-long fair, which will take place until Wednesday, Samsung SDI is displaying a wide range of cylindrical batteries optimized for micromobility products.”At the China Cycle, the company exhibits a lineup of cylindrical battery products optimized for micromobility to highlight its market competitiveness based on its super-gap battery technology and manufacturing competitiveness,” Samsung SDI said.
The Samsung Group affiliate unveiled various versions of its 21700 cylindrical battery, which refers to a battery with a diameter of 21 millimeters and a height of 70 millimeters.Among these products, the 20 watt-hour (Wh) high-capacity model, suitable for long-distance driving, uses high-nickel cathode materials with a nickel content of more than 90 percent. Samsung SDI added that the nickel content of this product is more than 10 percent higher than the previous one. Also, the product boasts a long lifespan and supports fast charging capabilities.Samsung SDI said it plans to target the micromobility market with innovative products featuring a tab-less design and next-generation 46-phi batteries. The tab-less design integrates tabs and electrodes using precision equipment to expand the path of the current, thereby enhancing output performance significantly, according to the company.Samsung SDI accounts for the largest share of the battery market for electric bikes. According to market research firm TSR, Samsung SDI ranked first in the battery market for electric bikes in 2023 with a 31 percent share.
